October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
1 in 3 women have experienced rape, physical/emotional abuse or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Domestic violence is an ongoing problem here in Oklahoma, as well as everywhere else in the world. Women and men are worried about leaving their partners because they have been convinced they cannot survive without their abuser. There are several different types of abuse. Women and men are victims of physical, emotional, financial, psychological, and verbal abuse.
Nationwide, an average of 3 women are killed by a former or intimate partner every day.
1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before they are 18 years old. Men who are exposed to physical or sexual abuse and/or domestic violence when they are children are 4x more likely than other men to continue the cycle of violence as adults.
